Hey! My name is Quentin Stoker and I'm the owner and founder at Stoker Advisory, Tax, & Accounting, PC. I've been a CPA helping clients with accounting, bookkeeping, and tax issues since 2012. After graduating from Brigham Young University with a Master of Accountancy, I started my career at Deloitte & Touche LLP where I worked over 8 years. I then transitioned to another firm - Thomas Doll, where I worked specifically helping dentists and other medical professionals with their tax, bookkeeping, and financial planning.
I am very appreciative of my past work experiences and employers - I learned a lot about navigating complicated & evolving issues, dealing with intense deadlines, project management, and especially client service! Through this all, I have developed a genuine interest and passion with helping small business owners succeed financially.
My experience in trying to deliver quality client service within both a large international business structure and a more niche accounting firm has taught me one principle that I strongly believe in:
SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS ARE BEST SERVED BY A SMALL BUSINESS OWNED CPA
We are in the same boat. We are dealing with the same issues - which helps me understand, communicate, and deliver higher quality services to my clients. I started my own firm so that I could have complete autonomy over the client-selection and operation of my business and break through all the common stigmas of CPAs…
The most common complaints/concerns I hear from small business owners are the following:
-My CPA is non-responsive
-My CPA is last-minute
-My CPA never reaches out with proactive planning
-I'm working with 3 different people at the same firm and they aren't on the same page
-I have too many service providers and they don’t talk to each other
I have come to learn that this a function of a few things:
(1) the traditional CPA firm partnership model becomes a volume game where the goal is to take on as many clients as possible through leveraging "less-experienced" staff. The end result is that the "experienced" partner does not pay enough attention to your business needs and there are gaps in communication between the bookkeeper, tax manager, and partner. By taking on too many clients there is not enough partner-level expertise and attention to spread across your clients. A promotion to partner is achieved by grinding it out over the course of several years; once you arrive, the goal is to spend less time hustling and let your staff do all the heavy lifting.
(2) Everyone these days is looking for "passive income" (think Airbnb rental, interest, dividend, etc.). The same is true for CPAs and CPA firms. CPAs are desperately trying to create processes, education, and systems in order to minimize needed touch-points with clients with the hope they can more "passively" run their business. Private Equity firms are coming in and buying CPA firms and rolling them up with the hope of packaging them together, stream-lining processes and then selling them to a larger buyer. Incentives become misaligned when CPAs don’t truly "own" their work but rather take on an "employee" mentality
(3) CPAs can get stuck in a tendency to take on any and every piece of work that comes across their desk and can get spread-thin and out of their comfort zone.
What gets lost in all of this is the end-client: the small business owner. Every business owner is unique and has nuanced personal situations, tax planning opportunities, business operations, and financial needs. The only way to address these needs is through proper time and attention from an expert.
I believe that Stoker Advisory, Tax, & Accounting, PC can provide extraordinary services to small business owners with their accounting, tax, and financial planning needs. I know that in order to be successful, I will need to be disciplined with my own capacity and client workload that I take on so that I can devote the attention to your business that you deserve. By working directly with me as the owner, I am completely incentivized to provide superb client service - my business depends on it!
